LAND WANTED - Community seek land to grow their own produce, to learn, nurture and enjoy the benefits of freshly picked, own grown juicy fruit and vegetables! The need for allotments in Mawnan grew from combined endeavors and extraordinary generosity from many people to help the children create a vegetable garden at Mawnan School.
The school garden focused a lot of effort and opportunity in a small area, and demonstrated what could be achieved in what might be described as a window box garden.
We thought if the children could grow enough salad in ‘metre by metre’ gardens for a small household, then so could their extended families, grandparents and so on. Why buy a bag of salad from the supermarket pumped full of gas, and tasting of chlorine which lasts only a day or so when you can pick the salad fresh from your garden when you need it, and at a fraction of the cost.
Salad consumption shot through the roof at school dinner time, with the children keen to taste the results of all their hard work.
Inviting the wider Parish community to become involved with the school vegetable garden through organised activities during the School Garden Club, encouraged parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get stuck in. Growing a new way of life, for life. There has been and still is a great deal of support from our local National Trust garden Glendurgan and Trebah, both have supported the project with advice, talks and tree stumps for seats. Rocket Gardens gave the garden a kick start with a delicious array of leafy salad treats to plant, with Hot Mustard lettuce a popular choice amongst the pupils.
Now this wider community is joining in the desire to grow fresh produce, and so the demand for Parish Allotments has blossomed and the original development group that prompted the School Garden scheme has naturally taken the next step to ensuring that an opportunity for an allotment exists for all interested parishioners.
Its not only householders that are waiting excitedly, Mawnan Playgroup cant wait to join in and have added their name to the waiting list, our Youth Club have their fingers crossed that there will be space for their salad crops and even after all their hard work the school would like more growing room. Householders are eagerly awaiting news that land will be found so that they can grow organic soft fruits, tomatoes, garlic, onions, peas, beans, even pumpkins for our new ‘October Pumpkin Celebrations’, and vegetables for the Mawnan Garden Show where you will always find amazing horticultural triumphs, also for the Mawnan Country Fayre Garden exhibits, for meal tables packed lunches and picnics.

Our local community growing alongside each other. Maintaining a connection through sharing knowledge, helping each other, working towards one goal, battling the same pests, sharing water, ideas, plants, seeds, strengths. The fitter helping the less able, the young keeping the older in touch with the new, and benefiting from learning traditional techniques, a blending of the years, with a mutual understanding through a shared interest.

The documented health benefits of gardening, reducing stress, increasing exercise, with the positive social interactions between all age groups involved, could foster a greater understanding of our changing environment and we hope, aid a deeper sense of belonging and well being.
